About Meden Cottage

Meden Cottage provides a welcoming, home-from-home learning environment in Budby where young people develop skills for life after APTCOO. Combining academic and vocational pathways, it prepares learners for further education, work, and independent living.

 

Our Vision

We aim to prepare young people for adulthood through academics, vocational training, and life skills—building independence, resilience, and respect. Our Post-16 and vocational programmes offer hands-on experience, career exploration, and the confidence needed for college, employment, and life beyond school.

 

Curriculum Approach

We blend core subjects with vocational qualifications through indoor and outdoor learning in areas such as sustainability, horticulture, travel training, and personal development. Programmes include AQA Unit Awards, The King’s Trust, and Sports Leaders, tailored to individual interests.

 

Key Activities Include

  • Maths: Functional Skills (Entry to Level 2) with real-life applications like budgeting and timetable reading

  • English: Functional Skills (Entry to Level 2) with reading, speaking, listening, and purposeful writing

  • PSHE/RSE: Topics in health, relationships, and life in the wider world, incorporating British Values, SMSC, Equality & Diversity, Protected Characteristics, and Prevent Duty

  • Project-Based Learning: Themed activities covering history, geography, British Values, and SMSC

  • Life Skills: Independent living skills, personal growth, and community engagement through volunteering and teamwork

  • Work Experience: Supporting APTCOO Food Club, holiday activities, and local work placements

  • Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG): Ongoing, impartial support from age 14, ensuring pathways match each learner’s aspirations
